Un pedacito de PerúA little piece of Peru in East Boston.
Mom learned to sell fruit in a Peruvian marketplace at age five. Today that same love feeds East Boston — handcrafted Minutas, homemade ice cream, and over 1,000 imported Peruvian provisions on our shelves.

De Nuestra Familia Para La Tuya
De un mercado en el Perú
a Bennington Street.
From a marketplace in Peru to Bennington Street.
Where it begins — Mom
Our mother started working at five years old. Every morning, she and her mother rose before dawn to find the best spot at the marketplace — picking fruits and vegetables, learning which ones were worth selling, learning how to talk to customers before she could even read. She didn't choose this life. She was born into it. And she loved it.
"She wasn't just learning to sell. She was learning everything that Frio Rico would become."
Where it begins — Dad
Our father served in the Peruvian military at eighteen. When he came home, Peru was in crisis — terrorism had flooded the capital, and safety was no longer something you could count on. Our parents, still young, made the hardest decision of their lives: leave everything they knew and start over in America.
Building from nothing
They arrived with little and worked wherever they could. But Mom never stopped thinking about the marketplace — about the fruits, about the flavors that tasted like home. In 2002, they put everything into a single pushcart and set up next to Kelly's on Revere Beach, serving handcrafted raspadillas to anyone who would try one. Most people had never tasted anything like it.
"They came to America with nothing and built something real — one cup of shaved ice at a time."
Today
From Revere Beach to Meridian Street, and now proudly at 360R Bennington Street — Frio Rico is still 100% family. Still women-led. Still made the way Mom learned in her mother's marketplace: with care, with pride, and with the best ingredients we can find.
