Our Story

From the streets of Peru to the heart of East Boston

Long before Frio Rico opened its doors, Luz was already
an entrepreneur. At just 8 years old, she was selling
vegetables alongside her mother in the bustling street
markets of northern Peru. She went on to sell shoes,
then made her own shoes to sell — a natural businesswoman
with heart, hustle, and vision.

When Luz left Peru during a difficult time, she brought
with her something no border could stop: her love for
her culture, her community, and the flavors of home.

In 2002, she opened Frio Rico on Bennington Street in
East Boston — starting with her famous Minutas, shaved
ice made with homemade fruit syrups, no fillers, no
shortcuts, just real fruit and real love. Word spread fast.

Today Frio Rico is more than a shop. It’s a gathering
place. Walk in and you’re immediately surrounded by the
colors and flavors of Peru — Inca Kola, fresh queso,
ají amarillo, panetón, and treats you can’t find anywhere
else. The TV hums in the back. Luz knows your name. The
whole family has worked here — kids, nieces, nephews —
everyone pitching in to share a piece of Peru with East
Boston and beyond.

That's what Frio Rico has always been.

Not just a store. A piece of home.
